Transformers

A distribution transformer is a device that changes high voltage electricity to lower voltages that are supplied to homes or residential buildings.

If mounted on a utility pole, they are called pole-mount transformers.  If the distribution lines are located at ground level they are known as pad-mount transformers.

Stay Safe around TransformersDanger Pad Mount Transformer

Pad-mounted transformers contain high voltage electrical equipment.  For your protection, avoid making contact with or tampering with a pad-mounted transformer.  Also, never allow children to play on or near transformers.

Pole-mount transformers should be treated in the same manner as an overhead power line.  Always maintain a safe distance of at least 3 metres (10 feet) from any pole-mount transformer.

Always Allow Access to Transformers

If there is a pad-mount transformer in your area, please maintain a clear path in front of the unit. The front is where the transformer's door opens and that door should be locked shut.

Be sure not to obstruct the front of the transformer. Obstructions include fences, shrubs, trees, storage sheds, and so on.  Any obstruction can:

  • Create safety risks to the personnel trying to access the transformer
  • Delay service restoration during power outages
  • Cause problems during routine maintenance of equipment
