Are you a residential or small business customer who is considering an energy contract for your home or business? Keep the following things in mind if you are approached to sign an energy contract.
Know Who Is At Your Door
- Always make sure you get a business card and look at the salesperson's ID badge first.
- Don't share personal information (i.e. your Energy+ electricity bill). An energy retailer only needs this information if you decide to enter into a contract.
- Energy+ does not go door-to door asking questions about your electricity bill. Contact us if you are not sure.
New Consumer Protection Rules - January 1, 2017
The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) has put in place new rules for energy retailers when dealing with residential and small business consumers including:
- No one can sign you up for an energy contract while they are at your home or business. They can leave information, but are not allowed to leave a contract.
- An energy contract cannot be automatically renewed or extended.
- If you enter into or renew a contract, you can cancel it within 30 days of getting your second bill under the contract. You have to pay those bills, but you won't have to pay a cancellation fee.
- Retailers must provide consumers with a standard Disclosure Statement and Price Comparison for both new and renewing electricity contracts.
